
Objective:
To teach children how words can build up or break down, encouraging thoughtful and kind communication.
Materials:
- A set of building blocks or LEGO pieces
- A “Word Jar” filled with slips of paper that have different words or phrases written on them:
- Positive examples: “Great job,” “Thank you,” “You’re amazing,” “Kindness matters.”
- Negative examples: “You can’t do it,” “That’s silly,” “I don’t like you,” etc.
- Two signs or labels: “Builders” and “Breakers”
How to Play:
- Setup:
- Divide the playing area into two zones: the “Building Zone” and the “Breaking Zone.”
- Place the “Word Jar” in the center.
- Gameplay:
- Each child takes turns drawing a slip of paper from the Word Jar and reading it out loud.
- If the word/phrase is positive, they place a block in the Building Zone (e.g., on a structure or tower).
- If the word/phrase is negative, they place a block in the Breaking Zone (e.g., remove a block from a structure).
- Discussion:
- After a few rounds, pause the game and discuss:
- How did the positive words make you feel?
- How did the negative words impact the game?
- Why is it important to use words that “build up” others?
- After a few rounds, pause the game and discuss:
- Wrap-Up:
- At the end, challenge the children to only use “building words” and work together to construct a strong and tall tower.
