As you may know, plants cannot develop properly or produce healthy fruits without water, sunlight and nutrients that they derive from the soil. There are instances in the bible where we are likened to plants. For example, in John 15:5, Jesus stated that he is the vine and we are the branches. As branches that wish to develop and bear healthy fruits, we cannot underestimate the importance of water, sunlight and nutrients.
According to Ephesian 5:26, we can infer that the word of God is like water. Water is indispensable to plants and keeps them hydrated in the heat. As children of God, the word of God is indispensable to us and helps to develop godly character (fruit of the spirit).
The popular Psalm 119:105 makes it clear that the word of God is a source of light. Without sunlight, plants would not have light to accomplish the process of photosynthesis, which is how they convert light to energy. In like manner, a believer without regular access to the word of God will not have enough energy to withstand daily challenges or produce godly character (fruit of the spirit).
Just as nutrients aid in the development of plants, so also the word of God aids in the development of every believer that commits his/herself to reading, studying, memorizing and meditating on the word of God regularly.
To summarize, if you liken yourself to a plant, then the word of God is your source of water, sunlight and nutrients necessary to develop the fruit of the spirit. Therefore, you need to ensure that you give it adequate priority each day.
Thank you!
